Vermeule had read the short novel as a high school student, but on rereading it, вЂњI was gobsmacked,вЂќ she said.

Now, in Marguerite DurasвЂ™s centenary year, the вЂњAnother LookвЂќ book club is celebrating the author and her book at 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 12, at the Stanford Humanities CenterвЂ™s Levinthal Hall.

The writer, Marguerite Duras, would tell the story again and again, throughout her lifetime, but never more compellingly than in The Lover, which received a prestigious Prix Goncourt when it was published in 1984, and sold two million copies. The affair eventually became a book, and the book became a masterpiece. So when a 15-year-old French schoolgirl had a passionate affair with a wealthy 27-year-old Chinese lover in Saigon, it created a scandal. Long before most Americans could find Vietnam on a map, the French ruled Indochina, and its Chinese, French, and native Annamese denizens lived in an unequal colonial stew. She earned an Oscar nomination in 1961 for her original screenplay for Alain ResnaisвЂ™ Hiroshima, Mon Amour.ДЇrance most recently earned an Oscar nomination in the foreign language category in 2015 for Mustang it last won in 1993 with Indochine starring Catherine Deneuve.StanfordвЂ™s book club honors the famous French writerвЂ™s centenary with a May 12 discussion of The Lover, her autobiographical tale of her scandalous teenage affair with an older Chinese millionaire, set in her native Saigon. But as the months wear on without news of her husband, she must begin the process of confronting the unimaginable.ДurasвЂ™ novel ( The War: A Memoir) was translated and released in more than 20 countries she wrote more than 30 novels in her career and directed 19 films. When Antelme is deported to Dachau by the Gestapo, she becomes friendly with French collaborator Rabier (BenoГ®t Magimel) to gain information at considerable risk to her underground cell. The plot centers on Duras (Thierry) who is is an active Resistance member along with her husband, writer Robert Antelme, and a band of fellow subversives in Nazi-occupied Paris.
